Emerson House offers a range of teaching structures depending on the needs of the child. Our core structure we call our ‘3-Hour Sessions’; over the course of a morning or afternoon these Sessions provide specialist teaching in each of the three key disciplines of Literacy, Numeracy and Touch Typing.
Sessions teaching in Literacy and Numeracy is usually one teacher to two children, carefully paired with reference to age, level and confidence. We believe that there are several significant social and learning benefits that accrue from this structure and pairings are reviewed on a continuous basis.
Depending on the child's assessed needs we also provide one-on-one Tutorials in each discipline as well as group Clubs. These are held after normal school hours or in the holiday breaks.
Most children attend Emerson House for at least two morning or afternoon Sessions per week, depending on the child’s individual needs and the parents’ and current school’s wishes. We can also cater for children who need to attend full-time if they are between schools, having a couple of terms or an academic year out of their regular school with a view to returning full time, or having a rethink about the best educational route to take in the future.
During the 3-Hour Sessions children are taught individually or in small groups (typically one teacher to one or two children). Over the course of the 3 hours the children have focused tuition in literacy, numeracy and touch-typing following carefully planned programmes determined by the child’s individual needs.
We have a maximum of around 22 children in the centre for our Sessions with separate study spaces and rooms with specialist materials for maths and literacy as well as a touch-typing room where children sit at one of our eight workstations. We believe that children’s self-confidence benefits from interacting and encouraging each other - during break times, before and after lessons start, we encourage a sense of community and shared purpose. In addition, we carefully pair children in order to optimise their learning experience during lessons which are taught by one teacher to two children.
Our morning schedule finishes at 12:15pm when children are free to return to their own schools for lunch and the afternoon schedule finishes at 4:30pm
In the afternoons, following the 3-Hour Sessions, there are individual tutorials in all of the key subjects, Literacy, Numeracy and Handwriting. These hourly tutorials are carried out at the Centre by separate arrangement with parents.
Literacy - All pupils have individual and appropriate sessions, which include all of the core aspects of literacy such as Reading, Comprehension and Spelling.
Maths - The pupils are taught in a structured cumulative manner which enables the key foundations for Numeracy to be firmly established.
Handwriting - The pupils are taught the basic principles, such as the appropriate Pencil grip, extending to full cursive writing.
In addition, we run the following Clubs during term time for small groups which are open to all children:
Maths Club: Thursdays 4:00-5:30pm
Reading & Spelling Club: Fridays 4:00-5:30pm
Touch Typing Club: An hour’s Club on Monday and Wednesday afternoons and on Saturday mornings. In addition Touch Typing courses are run during half term and end of term holidays.
